News You Can Use

Catching Up on the Zorro Franchise

Zorro represented from 1940-2005.

Now is a good time to review the story of Zorro, because we have a chance to see the 1920 silent version (with Douglas Fairbanks) coming up Sunday, May 5, at the Granada Theater. It won’t be a totally quiet affair though: Live music in the form of a concert organ will be accompanying the film, just like they did in the Olden Days. The modern Antonio Banderas films are fun enough, but if you go back to 1940 (with Tyrone Power), you get an interesting supporting cast, namely with Basil Rathbone (as Captain Pasquale), who went on to become the lead star for a most celebrated detective: Sherlock Holmes.

May the Fourth Be With You

Speaking of Franchises, May 4th is a great opportunity to watch Star Wars for the Gazillionth Time, but it’s also a great opportunity to watch the Gazillions of Star Wars Spinoffs, which we’ll start to compile here:

A rare 1983 Laserdisc Copy of Star Wars surrounded by Spinoffs and Fan Documentaries.

Mockumentary for R2D2.

May the Thumbs Be With You

  1. The Family Guy Trilogy - Comic book style satire of the First Three Star Wars Movie that ironically became Episodes Four, Five and Six, causing Confusion and Consternation in the galaxy of original movie fans.

  2. Star Wars Trilogy Bonus Material - 236 Minutes of Unseen Star Wars Material that Still Remains Unseen to This Day.

  3. Starwoids - An In-Depth Documentary of people who stood in line for nearly six weeks outside a Los Angeles movie theater to see Episode I and lived to tell about it.

  4. Spaceballs - possibly the first documented spinoff before spinoffs were popular, this 1987 Mel Brooks Saga isn’t 100% Star Wars related but it’s a Close Enough Encounter that deserves a rewatch.

  5. R2D2 - Beneath the Dome - a silly Entertainment Tonight/Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Styled Mockumentary of the iconic sidekick robot. Warning: Depicts partying with notable rockstars and reveals R2’s actual birth name.

  6. Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle - Image all of your Favorite Star War Characters running around as Thumbs that can Talk. The magic is actually in the voice and facial expressions, which are so perfect you’ll be on the lookout for the Sequel, or Thumquel, or Prethumquel, as the case may be.

Once again, The Dalles Library leads the way for more Star Wars Activities, read on!

Dennis James plays ‘The Mark of Zorro’ soundtrack

The Historic Granada Theatre is proud to welcome World-Renowned Cinema Organist, Dennis James to the Granada Theater stage. Riders in the Sky at Granada May 3

The Historic Granada Theatre is proud to welcome The Riders in the Sky back to the Historic Granada Theatre stage on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m.

The best in Western music since 1977. Award-winning harmonies, wacky Western wit and high-yodeling adventures. “It's the Cowboy Way!”

Ranger Doug is the guitarist who yodels and sings lead and baritone vocals. Too Slim is the upright “bunkhouse” bassist. Woody Paul is the “King of the Cowboy Fiddlers,” and sings lead and tenor vocals. Last is Joey the “CowPolka King” who plays this accordion. Riders in The Sky have recorded over 40 albums and toured across the world, including all 50 states.

The group combines American Western music and comedy that appeals to audiences of all ages. Riders in the Sky originated 45 years ago in a very different world. These young men wanted to keep a special music alive. They believed in preserving the heritage of Western music, as well as creating original Western music for new generations to continue the tradition.

Their family-friendly style also appeals to children, exemplified in their recordings for Disney and Pixar. They have won two Grammy awards for children’s albums. One was for a tie-in album around the characters of “Toy Story 2” called “Woody’s Roundup: A Rootin’ Tootin’ Collection of Woody’s Favorite Songs” and the other was for “Monsters, Inc. Scream Factory Favorites.” They also wrote and performed music for Pixar’s short film “For the Birds.”

Mr. Burtscher was a finalist in both the Seattle and San Francisco International Comedy Competitions (and a few other competitions to boot). He was part of Home Grown Comics at Montreal’s prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in 2018, which aired nationally on the Comedy Network. Pat’s also performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Singapore Comedy Fringe and as part of New Faces at JFL 42.

The latest full length project, I’ll Come Back, debuted August 2021 -  with national touring in support of the record ongoing. Although falling loosely under the bluegrass label, AJLBS generally plays sans banjo, with Sullivan Tuttle and Scott Gates on steel stringed acoustic guitars, AJ on mandolin, Jan Purat on fiddle, and Chad Bowen on upright bass - a configuration effectively used to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not as commonly found in the music of their peers.  Drawing from influences such as country, soul, swing, rock, and jam music, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music.

Bat Boy: The Musical

About the event

While many musicals are known for having memorable songs, there’s more to a musical than catchy tunes. Stories, for instance. Most of the great musicals have plots and characters that are as engaging as the music and lyrics. The plots come from many sources, including movies, novels, biographies and plays. In the case of Bat Boy: The Musical, the story is ripped from the headlines of a supermarket tabloid. CGOA Stages’ latest production opens May 3rd at the Columbia Center for the Arts and, in the words of director Ashly Will, it’s both “ridiculous and touching.”

Bat Boy: The Musical is based on a Weekly World News story from 1992 about a half-boy, half-bat found living in a cave. Many people will remember the eye-catching tabloid image of the wide-eyed, sharp-fanged creature. The musical, premiered in 1997, expanded and invented the story of the bat boy, who learns to speak and wants to be accepted by mainstream society. In other words, the story goes from being a tabloid-selling headline to a narrative with many themes, including hypocrisy, acceptance, forgiveness, racism, revenge and scapegoating.

If that sounds way too heavy for a simple rock musical with a ridiculous premise, audiences should be rest assured that the messages are tucked safely away inside infectious pop music, traditional Broadway-style tunes, comedy and at least as much laughter as the occasional tear. Like the tabloid headline that inspired it, Bat Boy: The Musical embraces the weird, whacky and colorfully exaggerated characters and situations.

CGOA Stages’ production of Bat Boy: The Musical is the latest show in a long-running series of musicals that has included Pirates of Penzance, Spamalot, The Last Five Years, Fun Home, Mamma Mia, Chicago, West Side Story, Rent and Little Shop of Horrors. The show is directed by veteran actor and director Ashly Will, who recently directed The Rocky Horror Show for Big Britches at the Bingen Theatre. The cast is made up of familiar local actors and quite a few new faces joining Stages for the first time.

Bat Boy: The Musical is being staged at the Columbia Center for the Arts, whose theatre has long been the home for outstanding musicals and other performing arts events. Bat Boy: The Musical is the first CGOA Stages production at CCA, and is the result of an exciting new partnership. Speaking of partnerships, the musical is being funded in part by season sponsor Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda, as well as hundreds of CGOA members, donors and sponsors.
