The North Wasco County School District Board unanimously agreed to begin contract negotiations with Dr. Carolyn Bernal of Oxnard, Calif., to become the District 21 permanent superintendent to start on July 1, 2021. “I am thrilled we found someone with her qualifications and experience,” said Board Member Rebecca Thistlethwaite.

Annabelle Lavier of The Dalles made her mile walk at Thompson Track this morning, Monday, Jan. 11. The 73-year-old has been coming to the track and field for decades. She remembers taking her son, Jack, at 6 months old and her daughter, Kris, when she was three years old to play at the field. They are now in their 40s.

Larry Fairclo of The Dalles has spent years putting together the pieces of his father’s Army career. The journey brought him a newfound respect for those that have served. Colonel Wright Elementary School may be getting a new name! And it's about time, as many former students will tell you learning to spell “Colonel” correctly at any age is difficult. But even worse for many community members is the history attached to the name of the elementary school. For years community members have expressed discomfort over the name of the school, saying it honors a legacy of bloodshed instead of learning, growth, and community.
Despite the many difficulties that have already faced teachers due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, Erin Peter’s says her teaching team is doing their best to make the best of it for their students.
“Even though this year looks completely different, I love getting to ‘see’ my students get excited about learning on Zoom.”

The Forest Service and Klickitat Trout Unlimited are proposing a new site development in efforts of enhancing recreation opportunities at the mouth of the Klickitat River. Plans call for adding parking, prohibiting the launch of motorized boats, installing a restroom, and restoring natural vegetation, and eliminating erosion. The proposal intends to improve water quality, scenery, and vegetation in the lower Klickitat National Wild and Scenic River Corridor.

Wight said it was a tough year fishing for pikeminnow so far, noting he has to avoid a lot more pelicans with his fishing line when tossing his imitation bate off The Dalles bridge. Good days bring 20 to 30 fish. His best is 48 so far this season. Past years brought double that in a day’s plunking. At $5 to $8 a fish, it’s still worthwhile.

Public comment is set to open for Google’s latest tax reduction at a joint meeting between The Dalles City Council and Wasco County Commissioners on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 2:30 p.m. The 20-year deal would require Google to pay 50 percent and 60 percent of assessed property taxes on two new data centers respectively. Marie Bailey, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died at her home Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020, under the care of Heart of Hospice. She was 67 years old. A memorial service at Gateway Presbyterian Church in The Dalles, OR, is set for Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 1 pm PCT.
