This week, for Entertainment Purposes, I’d like to talk about a project I worked on during the recent snowstorm. So let’s harken back to the days of Jim Drake’s Entertainment Blog™ and get an inside look into one man’s attempt at restoring order to retro-style electronic devices.
Finger on the Button - it’s finally working!
The Case of the Overdrive Button
Weeks before the storm, I managed to procure a Boss GT-6 Guitar Effect Pedal from a music shop in Portland. When I found it, buried in a dusty plastic bin, out of sight to most music shoppers who only pay attention to what’s within arm’s reach, I knew at once this was a special find. Honestly, I thought it was the coolest thing in the store. The Price Tag said it all - “As Is, No Power.” And best of all, it was an even trade in price for an amplifier I no longer needed.
The real fun for any project really begins when you get to dive in and take a unit apart to see what’s wrong. I mean, getting a new power supply from eBay and downloading an owner’s manual is all part of the fun, but finding out that the Overdrive/distortion button doesn’t work and noticing that the digital display said something about insufficient battery status is a lot more interesting than buying something with a 2-year warranty.
The recent storm gave me a perfect opportunity to take a closer look.
Unexpected Hair Nest
Similar to opening up King Tut’s Tomb, removing all of the slightly rusted screws from the back panel reveals an unexpected sight that no one could have predicted - a proliferation of Hair - not only mixed with Dust and Debris and clinging to potentiometers and resistors, but clear evidence of Hair that has been gathered as a Nesting Material.
Umm, yeah, it was pretty bad. Is this thing gonna work?
For days, I wondered how the heck a mouse could have gotten in there. The answer was lying right under my nose, or in this case, under my foot. I finally realized the built-in wah wah pedal has sufficient clearance and openings underneath due to the geared mechanism. It’s truly a wonder I didn’t find a squished mouse mummy.
I forgot to mention, an underside inspection revealed cracked solder joints on some of the main input/output jacks.
It’s surprising how many videos I’ve seen of people fixing circuit boards like this.
It’s hard to say what killed that 2-pin microswitch for the Overdrive control. Was it Over-Use, or Mouse-Urine? And what did I learn after installing a new switch and Still Not Have It Work? Well, those new switch leads need to actually be connected to something on the circuit board. When you overheat a part with a soldering iron to remove it and damage part of the copper connecting trace underneath, you learn to install a wire to get to the next part in the circuit. Overall, the satisfaction of the repair outweighs the mistakes. And I might want to get a Mouse Trap under that Wah-Wah Pedal, too.

About the show
With what Pop Matters describes as "tenacious swagger," locally acclaimed solo artist Ashleigh Flynn, from Portland, OR, recently dialed up the volume and debuted an all-female rock band as a nod to the “Rosie the Riveter” archetype from WWII. Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass music and Motown. A prolific songwriter and performer blessed with unbridled charisma, she arrived on the Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third LP, American Dream, a poetic lament to the elusiveness of that national ethos. A Million Stars followed in 2013 – a rollicking journey celebrating the women pioneers of the American West.
Reverberating raunchy tonk from the Pacific Northwest, The Mawlee Jones Band is rounding up delinquents with hootin’, tootin’, out-ball-country. This band of bizarre bandits have a twangy, swamp-witch sound that is punishably good— from belly-aching ballads to fruity cowboy rendezvous tales, they’re confessing the reality of backwoods queer love and eroticism.
Slutashia is a multi-talented rapper and drag artist from Eugene Oregon. She possesses a modern-day hip-hop aura and delivers her original rhymes with strong power. She has had the pleasure of opening up for other queer artists such as God Des, Wreckno & Big Freedia.
Host Shandi Evans is a big sparkly force to be reckoned with. She has been wiggling around theaters, stealing people's money, and wearing Crocs for 9 fabulous years! Quoted as “The Ziwe of Portland”, watch in awe as this Persian enby beauty crosses lines only she can cross. And yes, she is very, very pretty.

StoryPlay: Youth Storytelling Series
StoryPlay - a Gorge Speakeasy Youth Series - announces upcoming workshops for students (grades 6-12) to learn the art and play of storytelling. Students will meet at the Hood River County Library over four Saturdays (Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, Feb. 17) to get ready for a live performance (Feb. 24).

What comes to mind when you think of “storytelling”?
Telling a great story isn’t just about making people laugh or cry. It’s about sharing an event that changed you and how you live your life. And now, we’re inviting students in grades 6-12 to learn the art and play of storytelling through StoryPlay, the Gorge Speakeasy’s youth series!
Over four Saturdays, teens will meet in the library to learn how to be a fantastic storyteller. They’ll learn from storytelling pros about how to craft a story that makes an impact, how to present it to hold audience attention, how to improvise instead of memorize, and how to be more comfortable speaking in front of others. This is not a lecture-style series; games and activities are woven into the curriculum for maximum storytelling fun.
Students in grades 6-8 will meet at 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and students in grades 7-12 will meet at 12-2 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 27, Feb. 3, Feb. 10, and Feb. 17 (four Saturdays in a row).
The series culminates on February 24, when teens who want to can share their story in a live performance on stage at The Ruins in Hood River. This will be a Saturday matinee very similar to the monthly adult storytelling event, the Gorge Speakeasy.

Don’t Let the Eagles Down: Eagle Watch at The Dalles Dam Visitor Center (Rescheduled for Jan. 27)
Join The Dalles Dam Visitor Center for the annual Eagle Watch on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This is the time when the public is invited to marvel at and learn about majestic-as-heck bald eagles as they feast and roost in the Columbia River Gorge. The U.S. Forest Service, Rowena Wildlife Clinic, Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum, and Perch Wildlife Education will be there to answer questions about bald eagles and present live demonstrations of other raptor species.
The Dalles Dam Visitor Center will also be open every Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., during the month of January for eagle viewing (subject to weather.)

About the artist
While Dionne was performing background with the Drifters’ in 1962, Warwick’s voice and star presence were noticed by the song’s composer, Burt Bacharach. Dionne was signed to Bacharach’s and David’s production company, which in turn was signed to Scepter Records. In November of 1962, Scepter Records released her first solo single, “Don’t Make Me Over.” It reached #21 on the top 40. Warrick’s name was misspelled on the label, and then she started using her new spelling, “Warwick”, both professionally and personally. Her next hit single was “Anyone Who Had a Heart, followed by “Walk on By” in 1964 that solidified her career.
Warwick weathered the British Invasion better than most American artists with hits of “Walk on By,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.” Warwick was named the bestselling female vocalist in 1964. In 1965, she recorded “Thunderball” which became the theme song for the James Bond film Thunderball.
Dionne is one of the Kennedy Center Honorees in 2023 recognizing her decades of contributions to music and humanity. Dionne has won six Grammy Awards and been nominated a total of fifteen times. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and has been honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Songwriters Hall of Fame, Living Legend Award, just to name a few. She is one of the top five most recorded female artists of all time. She is also the aunt of legendary singer Whitney Houston.
