The Dalles, Ore., May 13, 2026 — The Columbia Gorge Humane Society is proud to announce the successful completion of its 2025 spay and neuter assistance program, providing 172 free surgeries for dogs and cats belonging to low-income families throughout The Dalles through July 1, 2026.
Every surgery represents more than prevention — it represents a family helped, a pet protected, and future suffering avoided.
By providing consistent access to spay and neuter services, the program helped reduce unwanted litters, support responsible pet ownership, and keep pets healthy and in loving homes. With an average litter producing multiple offspring, these 172 surgeries will prevent hundreds — potentially thousands — of future animals from entering already strained shelter systems.
This work would not have been possible without the continued partnership and support of the City of The Dalles and the generosity of community supporters committed to proactive animal welfare solutions.
“Behind every number is a family who loves their pet but may be struggling to make ends meet,” said Emma Roske, Shelter Manager for Columbia Gorge Humane Society. “When we provide these services, we’re not just preventing litter — we’re giving people peace of mind and giving pets a safer future.”
As demand for assistance continues to grow, Columbia Gorge Humane Society is actively seeking donors and community partners to help expand the program in the future. A matching donor partnership would immediately double the organization’s impact and allow even more families to access critical veterinary care.
