The Dalles Premier Outdoor Venue brings Al Hare for Tequila & Taco Thursday, April 25. Hare will play some taco-chomping classics as the tequila flows and tables fill with chips. Choose from tacos or burritos with a choice of chorizo, tequila lime, shrimp Birria, or pork.

Hood River Alt-Folk Rockers the Rezurectors were spotted on stage last Saturday night at Working Hands, with a Post-Pandemic Gig lineup featuring Paul Thompson III on percussion, Paul Thompson on bass, Dr. Chuck Haynie on banjo, Dan Ropek on guitar and Dana Love on mandolin. Working Hands is in the music news again with an upcoming retirement party for Original Open Mic leader Tim Decker on Sunday, April 28, who is handing over the MC reins to new host Jori Apedaile

Sundiver: 80s Sci-Fi may have inspired today’s Hard Rock Hits?

You might have noticed Sundiver is back on the scene coming up at Underground Music Station April 27. Their debut album was in 2019, and ever since I heard of the band, I’ve been intrigued to track down the apparently rare David Brin book of the same name. I’ll tell you that the search for a used copy in an actual non-webpage-based bookstore took not days, nor weeks, nor months, but yes: Years. In fact, I neglected to tell anybody that I actually found a copy in 2023, until now. You’d think I would have read it by now, but sadly, I haven’t. But I think it’s gonna Be This Year. In fact, I might Binge-Read it before the show and see if there’s really any connection between the two.

Where do Sappy Fir Cones Come From Anyway?

Last week I managed to stumble on what may be a secret hideout for those Sappy Fir Cones - careful reading of this Edition of All Things Music will tell you this rogue bluegrass outfit is opening for an upcoming show with AJ Lee and Blue Summit. I think they were practicing out behind the woodshed at the Trout Lake Hall. That makes sense to me, because it’s right next to the monthly Bluegrass Jam, which may have had something to do with the origin of the Sappy story.

Bodhi Mojo is a psychedelic, five-piece jam band rooted in good feels, good grooves, and soulful vocals. Characterized by mind-bending jams and heartfelt songwriting, they never play the same show twice and leave you yearning for more.

Formed in 2019 Bodhi Mojo developed their following by performing at countless DIY festivals and house shows. After honing their sound, the band’s following grew to support them in headlining and selling out some of Portland’s top jam funk venues including the Goodfoot, The Get Down, and The Haven. Their latest pursuits include releasing a full length album 'Midnight Dojo' in July 2022, touring the PNW from Seattle to San Francisco, and hosting the premiere PNW Jam Band festival “Mojo Family Festival,” entering its 3rd year in 2023, playing host to the best up and coming groove bands in the region.

Bodhi Mojo is made up of Jack McGrane on guitar and vocals, Chris Stein on guitar and vocals, Mike Ewers on bass, Harrison Games on drums, and Will Traylor on keys. Bodhi Mojo calls Portland, OR their home.

What began as an all-female festival collab quickly morphed into a serious passion project driven by sisterhood, harmony and humor…along with the shared desire to rage fiddle tunes and smash the patriarchy.

Big Richard is a neo-acoustic super group made up of four well established Colorado musicians: Bonnie Sims on mandolin, Joy Adams on cello, Emma Rose on bass + guitar and Eve Panning on fiddle.

Formed in late 2021, the band gained immediate notoriety for their charismatic stage presence and their vocal/instrumental prowess. After selling out all of their club shows Big Richard quickly started confirming festival appearances across America.

Hailing from Portland, OR, Yellow Birds is made up of three mainstays of the local music scene, Amanda Breese, Jenna Ellefson, and Rose Gerber. On their own, they each pull heartstrings with their stunning voices and songwriting. As a trio, something otherworldly happens when their voices meld seamlessly into each other in harmony. Their sound will remind you of The Staves, First Aid Kit, The Secret Sisters, and other killer lady harmony groups. Find them performing around Portland and the NW.

Tuesday, May 7, Ruins Tuesdays Season Opener with AJ Lee & Blue Summit w/ The Sappy Fir Cones

AJ Lee and Blue Summit made their first appearance in Santa Cruz in 2015. Led by singer, songwriter, and mandolinist, AJ Lee, the bluegrass band has performed all over the world, but finds home in California’s Bay Area. The latest full length project, I’ll Come Back, debuted August 2021 - with national touring in support of the record ongoing. Although falling loosely under the bluegrass label, AJLBS generally plays sans banjo, with Sullivan Tuttle and Scott Gates on steel stringed acoustic guitars, AJ on mandolin, Jan Purat on fiddle, and Chad Bowen on upright bass - a configuration effectively used to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not as commonly found in the music of their peers. Drawing from influences such as country, soul, swing, rock, and jam music, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music.

About the event

While many musicals are known for having memorable songs, there’s more to a musical than catchy tunes. Stories, for instance. Most of the great musicals have plots and characters that are as engaging as the music and lyrics. The plots come from many sources, including movies, novels, biographies and plays. In the case of Bat Boy: The Musical, the story is ripped from the headlines of a supermarket tabloid. CGOA Stages’ latest production opens May 3rd at the Columbia Center for the Arts and, in the words of director Ashly Will, it’s both “ridiculous and touching.”

Bat Boy: The Musical is based on a Weekly World News story from 1992 about a half-boy, half-bat found living in a cave. Many people will remember the eye-catching tabloid image of the wide-eyed, sharp-fanged creature. The musical, premiered in 1997, expanded and invented the story of the bat boy, who learns to speak and wants to be accepted by mainstream society. In other words, the story goes from being a tabloid-selling headline to a narrative with many themes, including hypocrisy, acceptance, forgiveness, racism, revenge and scapegoating.

If that sounds way too heavy for a simple rock musical with a ridiculous premise, audiences should be rest assured that the messages are tucked safely away inside infectious pop music, traditional Broadway-style tunes, comedy and at least as much laughter as the occasional tear. Like the tabloid headline that inspired it, Bat Boy: The Musical embraces the weird, whacky and colorfully exaggerated characters and situations.

CGOA Stages’ production of Bat Boy: The Musical is the latest show in a long-running series of musicals that has included Pirates of Penzance, Spamalot, The Last Five Years, Fun Home, Mamma Mia, Chicago, West Side Story, Rent and Little Shop of Horrors. The show is directed by veteran actor and director Ashly Will, who recently directed The Rocky Horror Show for Big Britches at the Bingen Theatre. The cast is made up of familiar local actors and quite a few new faces joining Stages for the first time.

Bat Boy: The Musical is being staged at the Columbia Center for the Arts, whose theatre has long been the home for outstanding musicals and other performing arts events. Bat Boy: The Musical is the first CGOA Stages production at CCA, and is the result of an exciting new partnership. Speaking of partnerships, the musical is being funded in part by season sponsor Columbia Gorge Toyota and Honda, as well as hundreds of CGOA members, donors and sponsors.

‘Crow Talk’ launch party at Ruins

The Ruins in Hood River hosts a book release party for Eileen Garvin’s “Crow Talk,” on Tuesday, April 30, from 6-9 p.m. Indoor venue, free admission.

Come join the fun for a night of celebration at The Ruins for the book launch of “Crow Talk,” a new novel from national bestselling author Eileen Garvin (The Music of Bees). The Garden Show at The Dalles Art Center

The Dalles Art Center presents The Garden Show exhibit, April 18 through May 23. Featuring artists of the greater Cascadia area whose work answers the question: How does nature show up in our everyday lives through a garden? Opening Night Party, Thursday, April 18, 5 - 7 pm.

About The Event

The Dalles Art Center & TDAC Landscaping Committee and The Beautification Committee of The City of The Dalles present an exhibit and multi-week schedule of programs around the concept that the beauty of nature can be found in the garden.

The exhibit at TDAC will showcase regional Cascadia artists who are creating work in response to the prompt: How does nature show up in our everyday lives through a garden? Historically, gardens have been designed to tame the wild with the use of landscaping tools and chemicals. In more recent years, aligned with the effort to create pollinator/bird/animal-friendly green spaces has helped to increase the use of native plants and to reduce the use of chemicals. In this exhibit, artists are reckoning with the concepts of traditional and non-traditional standards of beauty as they explore the wild in our everyday lives. Pieces must depict a garden/green space or be made to be placed in a garden. All mediums will be represented: paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramic art and textile/fabric arts.

The Garden Show: Everyday Nature

The Dalles Art Center Presents a Spring Celebration of Art and Horticulture with “The Garden Show: Everyday Nature,” an exhibit and event series celebrating the arrival of spring in the Columbia Gorge. This multifaceted exploration of the natural world will feature over 30 local artists and a range of workshops and lectures co-produced with The City of The Dalles Beautification and Tree Committee.

The festivities commence with a “Garden Party” on Thursday, April 18, reminiscent of the garden parties hosted by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at Buckingham Palace. Guests are invited to don their finest garden hats and enjoy finger sandwiches and botanical drinks served by Gander and Goose cocktail bar.

In addition, The City of The Dalles Beautification and Tree Committee has crafted two maps for self-guided tours in The Dalles: a walking tour highlighting the notable trees in the historic downtown district and driving tour of homes recognized with Beautification awards. Both maps will be available in printed form and for download through TDAC (in the gallery and online). Artists were challenged to create work that explores how nature exists in everyday lives. The mediums of the work range from outdoor sculptures to oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, and ceramic pieces in the gallery. Alan Root, a local iron sculptor was inspired by the heirloom Persian Copper rose growing in his backyard to create “Iron Heirloom Rose” that will be installed in the gardens at TDAC.

The ninth annual Hood River Cider Fest returns April 27.

As spring unfolds in the Hood River Valley, the blossoming fruit orchards herald the return of the celebrated Hood River Hard-Pressed Cider Fest. Now in its ninth year, this beloved annual event invites seasoned and novice cider enthusiasts to come together and sample ciders from Columbia River Gorge and Pacific Northwest hard cider makers. With more than thirty participating cideries and over sixty ciders on tap, this family-friendly event is a quintessential celebration of spring in Hood River.

In 2023, Cider Fest shifted venues to the Port of Hood River Event Site, an idyllic waterfront location offering unparalleled views of the Columbia River and panoramic vistas of the Columbia River Gorge. This year, the event expands its footprint even further, providing beachfront access to the Columbia River and the option for attendees to bring their own glass, contributing to an immersive and sustainable Hood River experience.

"In an effort to reduce waste, the Hood River Cider Fest event no longer requires a commemorative glass for participation in the cider tasting," said event director Lee Perry with TrueWest Presents. "Commemorative glasses are available for pre-order purchase, and plastic cups for those who do not wish to purchase one, but we encourage attendees to contribute to reducing the event’s carbon footprint by bringing their own jars, mugs, or steins—all are allowed."

Beyond cider sampling, the day-long event boasts artisan food, art vendors, music, and a designated children’s play area. Various ticket options are available, including a $10 entry-only ticket or a Tasting Package ticket, which includes entry and 12 tasting tokens for $30 if purchased in advance. Attendees under the age of 21 receive free admission to the event. The festival’s expanded footprint provides free parking and ample room to roam.

"Cider Fest provides everyone the opportunity to explore and uncover new favorite ciders and cideries in an atmosphere filled with fun, festivity, and abundance," said Katie Kadlub, CEO of Visit Hood River. "It’s also the ideal excuse for a weekend getaway and to immerse yourself in the beauty of spring in the Hood River Valley, see the fruit orchards as they burst into bloom when the entire valley hums with the excitement of the season."
