From Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis:

Today, Dec. 17, Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis announced that the grand jury indicted Logan Cantwell, 23, for the attempted murder of a Wasco County Sheriff’s Deputy.

On November 13, Cantwell was involved in a high-speed chase after fleeing detention during a traffic stop.  After one of Cantwell’s tires blew out, the deputy pulled his patrol vehicle in behind Cantwell’s vehicle along the highway.

Cantwell got out of his vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the deputy, striking the driver’s side of the windshield and the hood of the deputy’s vehicle. One of the rounds barely missed striking the deputy’s left side.  The deputy was able to reverse his vehicle while firing back at Cantwell, preventing the subsequent rounds from penetrating the cab of the patrol vehicle.

The grand jury simultaneously cleared the deputy of any possible wrongdoing for using his service weapon in self-defense.

Cantwell has been charged with Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and Attempt to Elude.  Investigations are still ongoing regarding Cantwell and other property crimes in Wasco County.  Cantwell is currently being held in custody in Skamania County, WA.

From CCCNews reports:

Cantwell was brought into custody in Skamania County on Nov. 17 after police searched for him for several days.

Cantwell allegedly fired on the deputy near Shaniko at around 8:45 a.m on Nov. 13.

The deputy was fired upon a mile west of Shaniko near the intersection of Bakeoven Road and Highway 97 after several miles of pursuit on Bakeoven Road.

Highway 97 was shut down for several hours while officers from multiple law enforcement agencies collected evidence and documented the scene.

Cantwell was able to escape, and authorities believe that he fled to The Dalles.

On Saturday morning, Nov. 13, at around 10:30 a.m., a special tactics and weapons team or SWAT vehicle was seen driving east on Interstate 84 toward The Dalles. Several other police vehicles with full lights followed suit thereafter.

Witnesses said they watched as a SWAT team entered a residence on Honey Dew and West Eighth streets in the Dalles at 12:25 p.m. the same day.

However, Cantwell was not arrested.

The group of officers later reconvened at Columbia Cinema, 2727 West Seventh St., and local citizens even purchased the team pizza.

Cantwell is a white, 23-year-old male, 5’09” with short strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes, and weighing approximately 182 lbs.

Police said Cantwell was to be considered armed and dangerous and cautioned the public not to approach him.

On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the search for Cantwell turned to Corbett, Oregon. The hours-long search prompted a reverse 911 call for residents to shelter in place, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office tweeted.

the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough search in Corbett for the 23-year-old Cantwell. After an hours-long search, authorities said Cantwell was no longer in the area.

Cantwell was then arrested the next day, Nov. 17, in Skamania County.
