Grocer making headway on Third Street store in downtown TD

Summit Excavation works on removing sidewalks on Third Street this morning, April 3, as renovations for the former TD Chronicle building at 315 Federal St. are kicking into high gear. The removal of the sidewalks is necessary to install an ADA entrance. Cameron Keith, 40, of Lyle runs the backhoe, carefully pulling away the concrete without damaging the building.

The Dalles, Ore., April 3, 2024 — The Steltzer family is kicking it into high gear as they work to bring a local grocery to downtown The Dalles late this spring.

Summit Excavation could be seen working out front of the building this morning at the corner of Washington and Third streets as curb, sidewalks and asphalt were removed so new ADA entrances could be installed.

Others were also working on the exterior of the building preparing it for new paint.

The area where the new grocery will be located on the east end of the building. Side Note - I used to sit near the window on the right when we had 8 people in the newsroom at The Dalles Chronicle in 2003. I sat next to Elroy King, Rodger Nichols, Dan Spatz, Jodi Nofziger-Rich, Mark Gibson, Kathy Ursprung and Neita Cecil - Tom Peterson.

“We are working on the property improvements and hope we can be done for a Memorial Day open,” said Bets Steltzer by phone. “We’re getting the fridges installed this week, and we got a lot going on in April.”

The Farm Stand grocery will take up about 7,500 square feet of the 15,000-square-foot building.

Other tenants in the building include Phoenix Rising Light Therapy, Cherry City Properties, and River City Saloon is still looking at the corner space that once housed Spud Cellar Deli.

Crews have been working to gut the west end of the building that abuts Third Street. This is the Possible River City Saloon location if a deal can be struck.

Steltzer recognized that the work was causing some lane closures and apologized for the inconvenience. “We’ll be finished up there in a few weeks.”
