Santillan-Guzman, Blaylock tapped to provide student insight to D21 Board

The Dalles, July 3, 2023 - North Wasco County School District is pleased to announce that two exceptional students have been selected as student representatives to bridge the gap between students and the school board.

The representatives, Yamari Santillan-Guzman and Kaleb Blaylock, were chosen by a selection committee this June and will jump right into the role at the July School Board Meeting on July 27th.

“After a recent school trip to Washington D.C. and getting a chance to speak to some senators and congressmen, I learned the importance and value of letting your voice be heard,” said Santillan, who is an incoming senior at TDHS. “I intend to speak for those who don’t have the chance to.”

Both students received recommendations from school staff members who thought they would be a good representation of the student body. 

Santillan and Blaylock will serve as vital liaisons, bridging the gap between the student community and the school board.

As liaisons, their responsibilities encompass acting as a conduit for communication, both from the students to the board and vice versa. This is the first time the district has had this type of student position on its board and empowered students to actively participate in shaping policy and procedures, making their opinions count in the decision-making processes. 

One of the primary roles is to advocate for student interests, essentially being the voice of the student body in matters that directly impact their education. They will work to ensure that the concerns, questions, and triumphs of their fellow students are brought to the attention of the school board. By actively championing student issues, these representatives will strive to create an environment that caters to the needs and aspirations of all students. 

She is an active member of the TDHS symphonic and marching band and Juntos Club, Nature Club and Key Club.

The Juntos Program is operated through the Oregon State University Extension Office and works to empower families around education. For example, through understanding college requirements. Juntos means together in Spanish.

Santillan is also the incoming Senior Class President, as well as an executive officer with our local sector of the National Honor Society. 

Kaleb Blaylock

Blaylock, a Junior, is active in the High School Drama Department, both acting and volunteering. He also has plans to join the TDHS Band this coming year.

“I just want to give my insight and knowledge (as a student) to the board to help them make more beneficial decisions,” he said, “It’s hard to see problems on the ground…” 

The pair will provide valuable input to help shape policies and procedures that reflect the interests and aspirations of the student community.

“I think this is an incredible opportunity for both our students and our board,” said Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Bernal who was on the selection committee. “This is an instrumental step in establishing a strong line of communication between our students, our leadership, our school board and our community.”
