Mark Powell looks to the vaulted ceilings that will soon grace a new front lobby at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in The Dalles. Behind him is the viewing room complete with new studs that will provide a wall that was taken out by a Subaru earlier this year.

Mark Powell can’t wait to have a new front door at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral home after a vehicle drove into the building on New Year’s day.

It may be a few more weeks as the settlement from the insurance companies is still being settled.

Powell took CCCNews on a short tour this morning, March 27, as a major remodel is going on at the funeral home constructed in 1918.

The renovations were somewhat forced when a black Subaru Forrester drove into the side of Spender, Libby & Powell Funeral.

New Year’s Day drive-through - A real mind bender - a view of the Forrester that ran through the front door at Spencer Libby & Powell.. It’s almost uncanny to understand how the vehicle was able to get up four feet - the height of the porch - to strike the funeral home at 1l00 Kelly Avenue. However, tire tracks on the concrete runner at the far left revealed a good clue. The vehicle apparently drove up the runner like a ramp before striking the brick wall and entering the building.

No one was injured, but it broke quite a few boards, smashed the sheetrock and tore up the pink brickwork on the facade of the building. The front lobby and viewing room in the funeral home were rendered unusable.

This morning, Powell showed the interior work that has been completed thus far. He said the front door entrance to the building will be moved to the center of the building and the front lobby will have new vaulted ceilings when the work is complete.

In addition, Powell said other renovations were on tap for the funeral home. He said the breezeway will be eventually closed off and a gathering hall will be constructed, complete with the ability for catering.

Other moves around TD town

Work on the final portion of the Recreation Building next to the Last Stop Saloon on east 2nd Street is coming along with some construction already occuring on the second floor seen here.

Teen Tip Off

This sign recently showed up on the former Workshop location, 201 East 2nd Street. The Workshop is now across the street in the former Sears location at 116 E. 2nd St. Looks like some teen clothing is going in next to Willow and Bark.
