Affordable Housing In WS gets $2.5 Million injection with passage of Fed bill

From Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation with additions by Tom Peterson:

The Dalles, OR (January 9th, 2023) – The 2023 federal omnibus spending bill that passed both chambers of Congress and was signed by President Joe Biden includes $2.5 million for Columbia Cascade Housing Corporation’s (CCHC) Assisted Living Facility to be located in Western Klickitat County near White Salmon.

Joel Madsen

“I am very excited about it,” said Joel Madsen, executive director at CCHC. “This has been a high-priority project for quite some time and to see direct support from the federal government is a significant wind in our sails.”

This $2.5 million is intended to leverage additional capital from USDA Rural Development and the State of Washington to construct the facility.

“There are not enough options for aging folks to find an affordable place to live while receiving appropriate services in Klickitat County,” said Paul Blackburn, CCHC’s Board President. “The development will address this significant unmet need. We are grateful to our federal delegates - particularly Senator Patty Murray - who recognizes the importance of this development for our community and fought to keep this community-initiated project in the federal spending bill.”

Klickitat County acquired the 7-acre parcel site for the living facility north of White Salmon at Main and Simmons streets and immediately leased the property to CCHC expressly for the purposes of community development.

Since the acquisition of the property, CCHC has advanced predevelopment and design efforts for the 52-unit facility where 16 units will provide memory care services and the remaining 36 dedicated to assisted living.

Not less that 25% of the development will be affordable to households earning at or below 50% of the area median income.

“We continue pulling together the essential capital sources to bring this development to reality. In our ideal scenario we break ground on the construction in August of 2023 and will move folks in a little over a year later,” noted Blackburn.
