Well-run school assemblies pay tribute to Vets

Well-run school assemblies pay tribute to Vets

This photo is of Jim Dunnigan on April 14, 1968; It was my last few minutes in the field before heading home. It was taken on a mountain top near Khe Sah, VietNam.

Veterans were honored at local schools late last week as Veterans Day events came to a head. Assemblies were held at schools throughout The Dalles and Wasco County.

CCCNews received the following letter from Jim Dunnigan who attended the assembly at Dufur School.

Dear Dufur Schools Staff,
I was a guest at the Clausen place and Holly and Carolyn invited me to the program at your school. I was honored to be able to attend and very touched by the ceremony. I believe it is the first time I have attended any sort of Veteran’s Day celebration and it is hard to imagine a program being better organized and meaningful than the one I witnessed on Thursday. The cards were touching and Carolyn and Reed gave me personalized cards. The music was beautiful and inspiring. Oh, the refreshments were quite good as well. Please pass along my appreciation to the organizers of this wonderful event.

Thank you again!

Jim Dunnigan

CCCNews was able to attend the assembly at The Dalles Middle School, and we were impressed with the well-organized event that included middle school students greeting visitors at the front door and ushers to show people to their seats.

Music Teacher Leslie Sullivan was congratulated for orchestrating the event.

New Principal Ryan LaDoucer and Paul Beasley also contributed heavily to the well-run assembly.

The Dalles Middle School and The Dalles High School bands, directed by Sullivan and Mic Kelly, also conducted The Marches of the Armed Forces. And the schools’ combined choirs sang The Star-Spangled Banner.

TD Middle School students Miss Ariel Leos and Miss Marley Perry play Taps during the assembly.

Leslie Sullivan speaks with the Army National Guard’s Color Guard after these soldiers opened and closed the assembly with a Presentation of Colors.

The Dalles’ Steve Lawrence was the keynote speaker talking about his time as a Platoon Leader in Vietnam, the friends he lost, and the sacrifices that were made.
